How it's calculated

CPC = Total cost ÷ Clicks

Divide total ad spend by the number of clicks received. To solve for cost, multiply CPC by clicks. To solve for clicks, divide cost by CPC. Use the same date range for spend and clicks. For the most you can pay per click, multiply your conversion rate by your target CPA.

Worked example

A campaign spends $250 and receives 500 clicks, so CPC = $250 ÷ 500 = $0.50. With a $1,000 monthly budget at the same CPC, you can expect about 2,000 clicks. If your landing page converts 3% of visitors, that is roughly 60 conversions.

CPC benchmarks by channel

Medians or averages from the published datasets linked in each row, mostly for US advertisers and the periods shown. Search CPCs in competitive industries such as legal, insurance and finance run far higher than the all-industry average.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate CPC?

Divide the total cost of the campaign by the number of clicks. If you spent $600 and got 400 clicks, your CPC is $1.50.

What is a good cost per click?

A good CPC is one low enough that the click can still turn a profit. Work backwards from your conversion rate and margin: if 4% of clicks convert and you can afford a $25 CPA, your break-even CPC is $1.00 (the Max CPC tab does this sum). The break-even ROAS calculator shows the margin side of the same decision.

What is the difference between average CPC and max CPC?

Max CPC is the most you tell the platform you will pay for a click. Average CPC is what you actually paid, which is usually lower because auctions charge just enough to beat the next advertiser.

How can I lower my CPC?

Improve ad relevance and quality score, tighten keyword or audience targeting, test new creative to raise CTR, and exclude placements and queries that spend money without converting.
